Whisky Business

With small bars popping up all over the country like some steroid-enhanced Whac-A-Mole game, plenty of attention has been going to the wines, beers and cocktails these new establishments are pushing.
This is all well and good, but what do you do if you happen to be one of the many Aussie drinkers who finds an organic unfiltered red decanted in a shoe and served in a teapot, or a schmiddy of banana-scented lager that tastes like a glass orange juice after brushing your teeth, a little (ahem) over the top?

Would you instead prefer a time-tested, age-old, add-hairs-on-your-chest drab of single malt or blended whiskey?

Well, we here at yourBars like to think we can help all the drinkers of Australia no matter what beer, wine, spritzer or spirit they choose to imbibe, and this time it's all for you whisky lovers.

Here's our list of the best places to enjoy a drop nationwide.

1

Shirt Bar
Sydney
Sometimes shopping for a shirt makes you thirsty, and sometimes having a few drinks requires a change of shirt; these are facts of life, and this is the only bar in Sydney that contains both in the same chic setting. The whisky list here is as impressive as a wardrobe full of one-off Christian Audigier hand-painted cashmere V-necks.

2

Zeta Bar
Sydney
Slip into some designer attire and charm the door police, if you feel worthy. This sophisticated bar serves up city views, award-winning cocktails and one of the most impressive whisky lists this harbourside city can muster.

3

Shady Pines Saloon
Darlinghurst
The brains behind this underground outfit have skillfully injected the Wild West into a saloon fit enough for the fashionable inner-city set. Paper napkins make do for coasters, while quirky antiques adorn the wood-panelled, dimly lit walls. Unleash your inner cowboy and order a whisky, straight up.

4

Gin Palace
Melbourne
If velvet drapes, leather booths and seductive lighting doesn t get you in the mood for a few nips of single malt, check your pulse because this is the real deal. Home of Melbourne s glamour set, this 1950s-inspired haunt is a beauty.

5

Baranows
Hawthorn
It might have begun as a premium cigar lounge, but now this luxurious bar is making its mark as a haunt for the connoisseur who likes a fine drop of what the Scottish call the "water of life". There are few places south of the equator that carries as extensive a range as this.

6

Cloudland
Fortitude Valley
You ll be on cloud nine after perusing the whiskies on offer at this stylish Brisbane haunt. Sure, the 10 metre waterfall and the retractable glass roof are impressive but it s the single malts, rare blends and little known Aussie drabs that will really make your evening.

7

Helvetica
Perth
Fittingly named in honor of a typeface known for its neutrality and clarity, this bar has a clear vision of its own: to provide a chic small bar where whisky reigns supreme. There are plenty of other great drinks on the menu, but the lighting, soundtrack and ambience all seem to be made for imbibing the amber elixir.

8

Rob Roy Hotel
Adelaide
With more than 100 whiskies on offer and Adelaide s second longest continuous liquor license, there s no doubting these guys exactly know what they re doing. The decor and vibe is almost as impressive as the drinks list.

9

Lark Distillery Whisky Bar and Cafe
Hobart
Offering more than a taste, this great venue is a living ode to whisky, where they make their own in-house blend and invite you to watch the process in motion. The list has depth and charm, with rare treats from across the globe.
