Dry Dock Hotel
Balmain
|
Anzac Day is all about celebrating our history, and pubs don t get too much more historic than this one. As the oldest licensed pub in Balmain, this place has a fairly good chance of being as old as some of the original Diggers. Renovations and refurbs throughout the years have kept it cosy enough without losing its heritage charms. Make this your Anzac Day destination for a celebration drenched in nostalgia.

Courthouse Hotel
Newtown

The decor here is as eccentric as its clientele, but if you've ever been then you know this place back to front and wouldn't change a thing. This pub doesn't care what its image is or what people think of it, leaving much more effort free to be spent on serving up quality, icy cold beers. This quirky little speakeasy is the ideal spot for an Anzac Day spent celebrating the diversity the Anzacs were defending among some of the most diverse people in this country. And of course, what better location to enjoy such a venerable Aussie institution than a pub on Australia Street?

The Standard Hotel
Fitzroy
|
This pub might be nestled in the back streets away from the bustle of Brunswick Street, but the vibe at this joint is lively to say the least. A regular bill of live music acts grace the stage and rest assured that your drinks for the day are covered with a very comprehensive wine list as well as an extensive range of local and imported beers available.

The Local Taphouse
St Kilda East
|
On this day of national honour why not also pay your respects to the little guy by stopping by The Local and trying some boutique brews? This watering hole is all about beer education. Last year the venue hosted a special Anzac SpecTAPular and featured eight of New Zealand's finest craft beers on tap for the first time in Australia in the spirit of NZ and Aussie cooperation.

Mooseheads Bar & Nightclub
Canberra
|
I should start by saying that this isn't your traditional pub; the youthful set are well catered to with live DJs, dancing, four bars over four levels, a huge signature cocktail list and chic contemporary design. Cocktails are the specialty; order a classic or share one of their famous Megatinis with three of your best mates.

Breakfast Creek Hotel
Breakfast Creek
|
This iconic watering hole is possibly one of Brisbane's best loved pubs and an Anzac Day favourite. The mammoth heritage building features a spacious tropical beer garden and five unique bars. Be sure to try one of their world-famous prime-aged steaks from the gorgeous Spanish Garden Steakhouse, which are chargrilled to perfection in the open kitchen in front of you. It's also one of the few pubs still left that serve beer "off the wood" in wooden casks.

Montgomery's Hotel
Hobart
|
This quintessential Aussie pub is an obvious choice for the big day. No fruity drinks with miniature umbrellas or designer-clad clientele here - the drink of choice is beer and all are welcome in this unfussy saloon, from the young regular crowd to the rowdy backpackers and the dusty old regulars. Nab a pool table, drink it up with mates or join in the Anzac festivities.

Daly Waters Historic Pub
Daly Waters
|
It's a scientific fact that any bar decorated with knickers and bras hanging from the ceiling is about as Australian as it gets. If it isn't a fact, it should be. Normally inundated with backpack-toting tourists, Anzac Day - of all days - should be a time when the locals come out in force to take back their pub. Your country needs you; needs you to get out there and show these tourists how it's done.

Sail & Anchor Pub Brewery and Restaurant
Fremantle
|
Freo nightlife is something to behold, and this pub certainly doesn't let the team down. A big range of beers on tap and a 500g steak should be enough motivation to make this place your Anzac Day headquarters. If not, then maybe the live music and party atmosphere will sway you. Make no mistake, this pub may have some relaxed lounge areas upstairs but it will crank come Anzac Day. Pretenders need not apply, this one is strictly for weekend warriors with an extra day to burn.

Boasting sweeping panoramic views overlooking Horseshoe Bay, this local haunt provides plenty of eye candy to go along with an icy cold beer. An Anzac Day spent hear encompasses just about everything great about this country; a nice cold beer and a steak fresh from the grill while looking out over crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches.
