Toast the diggers with two-up at your local RSL

Known commonly as the natural habitat of bingo-playing, purple-rinse-permed grannies, the RSL was traditionally formed to support returned war veterans. And every year come April 25, the local RSL comes into its own with activities to remember and celebrate Australia's brave servicemen and women. So regardless of your age or grey-hair tally, crawl with us down the RSLs of the eastern states to attend ceremonies, play rounds of (legal) two-up and wash down some crunchy Anzac bikkies with a schooner or two.

Before our world of Wii and Nintendo DS, bunker-bound troops relied on rounds of two-up to fill in quiet afternoons. Because of dodgy dealers, it was made illegal on days other than the one pertaining to the Anzacs. See what all the fuss is about from 1.30pm in the Crystal Palace at Logan Diggers RSL.

Start your Anzac Day the right way and attend a memorial service. Roll out of bed in time to assemble on Beach Road by 5.15am, ready for the 5.30am beach front dawn service. You'll have time for a quick nap before partaking in some two-up from 3pm on the RSL's deck.

Elwood RSL

Given most of Victoria are at the footy on Saturdays, this RSL is the pick of the bunch for an action-packed Anzac Day. There's a memorial service in the morning followed by an afternoon of two-up, and the Essendon v Collingwood match on the telly. The bistro will be open for dinner and we've got our eyes fixed firmly on the 400g house-cut prime rump steak with chips and sauce.

Penrith RSL
Penrith
Anzac Day is the one day where punters are happy to wake before the sun instead of lazing about in bed until 10am. Beat the sun by a long shot and line up at 4.30am for the march through Penrith, followed by toasted sandwiches and hot strong coffees in the RSL cafe. Hang around for two-up in the afternoon, where all proceeds from the $3 admission fee will go to charity.

If you're up in time for the sunrise service at 6.15am in the RSL's memorial garden, you'll score a $6 breakfast in the club. And if you're keen for some two-up between noon and 6pm, you'll be able to sneak in for a free snag on a bun from 2pm-4pm.

Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL

Even though it's Anzac Day it's still hard to let go of a Saturday morning sleep-in. This RSL is hosting a sunset service for sleepyheads at 5pm in the Bert Crook Memorial Garden, followed by a night of live entertainment. But if you can get down to the club before noon you'll get a cheap lunch and get to cheer on the NSW Fire Bridge Band and Marching Girls.
