Sydney's Lounge Bars

On a recent trip to Canberra, some friends and I visited one of the city's nicer lounge bars. Sinking into an inviting couch and listening to smooth ambient music (pitched at a refreshingly comfortable level) while being served cleverly mixed cocktails, my friend remarked that Sydney has nothing like this. This made me stop and think. Could this be true? Sure, Sydney's nightlife scene may be mobbed with overcrowded dance clubs and stuffy beer-soaked pubs. However there are still a few Sydney venues where quieter, more refined patrons can lounge around, relax and enjoy themselves.

1

The Victoria Room
Darlinghurst
Edging the boundary between restaurant and bar, this gorgeously plush Baroque-style space serves delicious tapas and cocktails. Translation; eat less, drink more.

2

Hemmesphere
Sydney
Don't let the fact that this venue lies on the pricey side put you off. With such a laidback atmosphere, this Moroccan-styled locale is worth it for the cocktails alone.

3

Lotus
Potts Point
Constantly featured on our lists of favourites, we just can't keep away from this remarkable cocktail specialist. Faithfully intimate, this spot has warm candle light and heavy chandeliers that set off the retro wallpaper in just the right way.

4

Zeta Bar
Sydney
While an effort must be made with the clothes one wears, the pay-off is entry into this dazzling yet casual New York-style bar. It features one of the best wine and cocktail selections in the city. Venture out onto the terrace and take in the beautiful Sydney skyline.

5

The Loft
Darling Harbour
Once an exclusive who-you-know venue and later a popular party-girl hotspot, this waterside bar has done a lot of growing up and has settled down to become a charming and relaxed delight.

6

Hugos Lounge
Kings Cross
Newly expanded, this old favourite is worth the wait. Try a cocktail from the award-winning selection or order a tasty gourmet pizza.
