Superb suburbans

APEC schmapec. What a lot of fuss and bother. If it's not impairing one's ability to fight the 'functional' CBD transport system, it's instilling a level of paranoia that has you glancing sideways at the guy who's been making your coffee for two years. Like maybe the whole barista thing is a cover, and now is his time to shine.

The world is far too city-centric these days, which if you ask me, is a waste of time. With all this new-fangled technology, we'll soon be free to do our work from remote, mobile terminals while frolicking in meadows with rabbits, and the idea of grey towers chock-full of miserable employees will seem foolish and dated.

Escape the stressful summit and the bustle of the daily grind. Here's our list of suburban heroes:

1

Northies
Cronulla
This Shire destination offers up entertainment seven nights a week. Princesses should check out Friday's Martinis and Manicures, where you can enjoy a cocktail and pampering session for $10.

2

Oatley Hotel
Oatley
An extensive update in late 2006 has vamped up this old local fave. Visit on Wednesday night for comedy.

3

Manly Wharf Hotel
Manly
With modern but unpretentious decor, icy beers and hearty nosh, this hotel on Manly Wharf has become a haven for locals, visitors and surfie party clans.

4

Newport Arms Hotel
Newport
The Pittwater view from this hotel is a stunner and the garden area is deservedly popular during the day. Weekends provide a welcoming family atmosphere. Pool tables, sports coverage and a kiddies' playground seal the deal.

5

Camden Hotel
Camden
Revamped and relaunched in 2006, the new Camden Hotel is a modern, all-purpose pub with a pool room, cocktail bar and restaurant.

6

Greengate Hotel
Killara
This pub is a popular choice for many people on the lower North Shore for good reason. The Christmas Eve party here is one of the biggest in Sydney.

7

Mean Fiddler
Rouse Hill
People flock from miles around to bathe in the warm atmosphere of this charming, traditional Irish pub with its family-orientated beer garden. This place also becomes clubby on weekends.

8

Roxy
Parramatta
Located in the legendary refurbished Roxy Theatre, this bar is run by the Palace Group. It brings some inner city styling to the west. The sunken lounge hosts DJs.
