My Favourite Basements
Don't be afraid to go down. All the way down. Here are a few of my favourite basement bars. Everybody knows that drinks taste better with a subterranean setting.

Mocean
Bondi Beach
|
This place is only slightly bigger than my handbag but that's why I love it. Venture down underground and you'll find booths, dark shadows and a teensy cocktail selection. Old skool DJs and small acoustic gigs feature regularly.

Candy's Apartment
Kings Cross
|
If you decide to head down to clubby Candy's, give your good side the night off. This Kings Cross lair is naughty. The dance floor heaves. Expect DJs, live bands and the possibility of messiness.

Crystal Bar
Sydney
|
Ok this one is much more refined and sensible than the other venues I've mentioned. On weekdays it's all suits, quiet conversations and pricey cocktails. Crystal is not the most exciting place in the world, but I like basement bars and this one gives me a depth charge. The subterranean setting and all those heavy sandstone walls give me the chills... in a good way.

Beauchamp Hotel
Darlinghurst
|
Admittedly the Beauchamp is generally known as a pub - plain and simple. But this place actually also has a secret basement lair that hardly anybody knows about. Take the stairs straight down to discover the Velvet Underground. It feels kinda selective and is coated in luxe wallpaper and velvet seating. Order something dangerous and yummy from the cocktail list.

Marble Bar
Sydney
|
All that art set up deep down.... ooh it's nice. Marble Bar is great for after-work drinks with the corporate set. Expect all ages and some boozy conversations. Spilt office secrets make it extra interesting.

The Basement
Circular Quay
|
What would a basement bar list be without a mention of this place? A pretty crappy list. That's what. The Basement is an institution. I'm stating the obvious. Come here for live gigs in a small, intimate setting. Slink into this brasserie-style gig space. Check out the gorgeous muso types. Listen to those velvety voices.
