God Save the Queen

There's nothing Australians seem to like more than a long weekend. But unlike other public holidays, the second Monday in June never seems to warrant more than a few cheeky Sunday evening brews down at the local. This time around, we decree that you do the Commonwealth proud and have a riot of a time celebrating for our dear Queen Liz at a venue where the monarchy provides the moniker. Here's our pick of the top places to raise the Union Jack and belt out a heartfelt rendition of 'God Save the Queen'.

1

Queen's Head Hotel
North Adelaide
With a name that conjures images of postage stamps and currency, this heritage-listed hotel was established in 1838, when the queen in question was Victoria and Australia was still made up of colonies. Now though, it's a contemporary spot for commemorative beers and some mod-Oz tucker.

2

Durham Castle Arms
Kingston
For a big taste of the mother country in Australia's political heart, this ye olde pub is a Brit-style watering hole for everyone, from party-keen young locals to the occasional beer-friendly campaigning pollie.

3

Queens Wharf Brewery
Newcastle
Salute the Queen and her wharf at this harbour-side favourite in easy-going Newcastle. It's bound to be packed all weekend, so get in early and secure a prime spot by the water to listen to live and local entertainment in the afternoon sun.

4

Royal Cricketers Arms
Prospect
Pay homage to the great British tradition of a rollicking cricket match with a bevvy or two on the verandah at this leafy Prospect retreat. The old-style interiors will have you thinking you've stumbled across a cottage somewhere in Somerset. Don't worry though; the beer here is served the Aussie way - ice cold.

5

Royal George Hotel
Fortitude Valley
Live music is the Sunday specialty at this royally-named establishment. Although there've been plenty of King Georges, this is the place to acknowledge the original Queen Mary with her namesake cocktail - a bloody mary, made of vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, salt and Worcestershire and Tabasco sauces.

6

Queens Tavern
Highgate
Even though hard-working West Australians miss out on this long weekend, it still makes a good excuse to head to this tavern for some Sunday fun. If you're an early riser, get in for a bowl of Coco Pops topped with fresh strawberries, and if you d prefer an afternoon cocktail, try the Queens' jersey caramel vodka infusion.

7

Victoria Hotel
Darwin
If your long weekend is set to take place in balmy Darwin, head to this hotel and it's likely you'll run into a British backpacker keen to share some love for the reigning head of state. Be ready to party hard though; this place usually rocks out well into the wee hours.

Queen's Head Cafe Bar
North Hobart
If you like your weekends full of live music and your watering holes complete with a grand piano and all your favourite beers on tap, take your regal celebrations to this relaxed Tassie spot. You can get a hearty feed here too.
