Drinks for the Grinch

It's the most wonderful time of the year.
With the kids jingle belling,
And everyone telling you,
"Be of good cheer,"
It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Bah, humbug!

Whoever wrote that bloody song has a lot to answer for. Sure, Christmas may be fun for the kiddies and a good opportunity to catch up with family and friends, but since when does it necessitate demands to "be of good cheer"?

Unsurprisingly, cheer is often in short supply during the Christmas season as we succumb to traipsing down shopping isles with tinny Christmas carols blaring from above, homemade eggnog kicking us in the guts, surrounded by mawkish displays of hideously stained tinsel.

Worse though is the fact that many of our favourite hideaways have equally received a dose of the crazies. Local pubs insist on scheduling Christmas bingo and Christmas turkey raffles and replacing wholesome sport with TVs overflowing with bathetic Christmas stories. Magical my foot.

Fortunately for us, there remain a few venues with enough integrity to survive the Christmas period without the chintz. Here then is a list of favourite lounge rooms for those in touch with their inner Scrooge.

1

Chaise Lounge
Melbourne
There's always something going on at this eclectic basement bar with a boudoir feel. Wine tasting, DJs, live funk and quiet cocktails all feature. The atmosphere changes accordingly.

2

Tonic Lounge
Potts Point
Reminiscent of a friend's house party, this bar is unpretentious, bustling and friendly. There's no attitude, just plenty of great music and beer.

3

The Lark
Paddington
Unfolding over two levels of couches, cushions and endless cocktails, this converted 19th-century cottage is where you'll find those local creative types seeking refuge over a clever martini.

4

Luxe Bar
Highgate
This sleek bar is the epitome of luxury. Sip on a chocolate martini surrounded by plush ottomans, Featherstone chairs and velvet curtains.
