Australia Day Hotspots

It's that time of year again; where lads get their kit off to bare Southern Cross tatts, inebriated family members throw shrimps on the barbie, household pets are put on a code red alert for pyrotechnics, and the nation indulges in our all-time favourite pastime: beer drinking. If you haven't picked out a spot to kick off the patriotic festivities, then here's a few doozies to get the ball rolling.

1

The Local Taphouse
Darlinghurst
Twenty beers on tap: need I say more? The patrons at this inner-city joint take their liquid amber just a little bit fancy, but far from only stocking imports, most varieties originate from smaller Aussie breweries, supporting the little guy (nice!). The pub grub is definitely worth a mention. True foodies may even go for the beer tasting paddle matched with cheese, or the beer and food matching banquet for $48. You can't really get it wrong at this Darlinghurst beer mecca.

2

The Argyle
The Rocks
Steeped in Aussie history, The Rocks really is the heart and soul of this cosmopolitan city, so what better way to celebrate the big day than at The Rocks' premiere drinking den, the Argyle? The venue maintains the character of days of yore, with modern finishes. The unique nature of the setting does have its downside; ladies are forewarned, the cobblestones don't agree with heels and there will be casualties. But the nibbles are good and the courtyard is ideal for summer weather.

3

Cloudland
Fortitude Valley
This booze and dining establishment is somewhat of an innovation in Australian architecture and design. Everything about it is a little over the top - from the ultramodern giant retractable glass roof to the 10 metre waterfall - but breathtaking nonetheless. Described as a futuristic Garden of Eden, the beer garden is the ideal setting to kick back with a Bellini, but they can be a little fussy about who they let in, and the bevvies don't come cheap.

4

Darwin Ski Club
Fannie Bay
This could arguably be Australia's best beer garden. Ever. Extending onto the beach at Fannie Bay and shaded by a procession of palms, the clubhouse lawn has postcard views and sunsets that will take your breath away. Australia Days are always great at the club, with activities such as thong throwing and lamington eating, as well as crocodile-themed races.

5

Gertrude's Brown Couch
Fitzroy
This humble Melbourne haunt is what we like to call a true local. With a fiercely loyal and unpretentious clientele, the venue plays host to regular live music acts, with an ever-flowing line-up of local bands and DJs on offer at preposterously cheap prices. The eclectic crowd flock there for the "mate's rates" specials and to kick back in the cosy beer garden. They also support the Aussie arts scene by displaying and endorsing local artists.

6

Golden Monkey
Melbourne
In the spirit of celebrating all that is good about our fair nation, the Oriental-inspired, award-winning booze haven that is Golden Monkey deserves a shout out for its eclectic Asian influence - we are, after all, a multicultural land. Follow the staircase down to what looks like a 1920s opium den, and let the aromas arrest your senses. Top-quality Asian-themed cocktails and tapas-style bar food are on offer to tantalise your tastebuds. Laneway seating is also available.

7

The Apothecary 1878
Adelaide
What's your poison? If beer doesn't top your list (you prefer something a bit more ... refined) then this chic saloon might be the place for you. No expense was spared to restore this 19th-century chemist and transform it into one classy bar. Classic Thonet chairs and marble tables seem almost too swanky to drink booze and devour tapas off, but the food and drink is too appetising not to! This decadence definitely extends into the menu. Try the roasted pork belly with herb and chilli salad, or the Persian feta and toasted ciabatta.

8

Duckstein Brewery
Margaret River
Have a different kind of sausage sizzle this January 26 and celebrate Germany's great contribution to Australia - after all, they've given us top-notch beer, delicious hearty grub and, er, beer. This German dining experience showcases the authentic culinary flavours of the motherland, topped off with delectable handcrafted brew, all set in a convivial and lively atmosphere.

9

All Bar Nun
O'Connor
This local gem is one of the best in our nation's capital. The bar has a whopping 23 wines available by the glass and the succulent food menu is just as vast. The Australia Day festivities begin in the morn with a great Australian brekky barbecue, and the line-up of live bands, promos and bar specials throughout the day are sure to keep the glasses clinking and the punters in high spirits at this official Triple J Hottest 100 party venue.
