This 1920s warehouse features an antique jarrah bar, polished timber floors and a garden courtyard. It's a mid-week conversation cavern and a weekend hotspot.
Hidden, mysterious and divorced from the main streets, Word gains its x-factor from its quasi-secret laneway setting. But unlike most of the other beloved alleyway bars in Melbourne, this venue has another drawcard: it's actually larger than a broom closet.
Spanning two rooms and spilling into a courtyard, Word supplies a shot of funk and sophistication, along with the extra helping of elbow room - so barflies can schmooze and move, without spilling drinks all over their shiny party shoes.
Located within the shell of a 1920s warehouse, Word is open to the masses whenever it's not booked out for private functions. The interior is filled with history and plenty of cosy touches; chesterfields, ornamental detailing, exposed red brickwork and a blazing winter fire all set the scene.
Aside from the homely vibe, the barscape is also imbued with a strong party undercurrent. Commercial hits flood the space ever night of the week and DJs take control of the decks on Friday and Saturday nights, cranking up the volume and playing old school classics, smooth grooves and dance anthems.
Cocktail hussies are recommended to try the Oatmeal Cookie: it mixes Jagermeister together with butterscotch schnapps, Baileys and cream. Alternatively, order up a Hi Apple Pie, which melds Absolut Vanilia together with apple juice and cinnamon syrup.
Those feeling peckish can turn to a plate of tapas for sustenance.
