This gay and lesbian pub attracts a vibrant crowd that's willing to lose a few shirts for the sake of sexy clubbing. Expect gender illusionist performances and 'best butt' competitions.
Hidden behind a late nineteenth century facade in the Fortitude Valley lies Brisbane's leading gay and lesbian nightspot. The exterior, with its old-school aqua tiles and colonial-style balcony, entirely belies the mass of glitter balls and drag queens that spin and sparkle within. Set foot inside The Wickham and you will truly experience what this joint is all about: disco, dancing and debauchery. With three bars, an outdoor terrace and a gaming room, The Wickham is a sizeable establishment and on any given night it heaves with punters. The vibe is always upbeat and effervescent, with shirtless boys shaking their stuff on the dance stage. Entertainment is provided on a regular basis and includes anything from competitions to drag shows. The weekly 'Boys on Tuesday' event features miming by gender illusionist Miss Synthetique, strippers and a best butt competition. There's also a line-up of talented DJs, including some international acts, who mix body-busting beats for the eager clubbers. The Wickham markets itself well, hosting major events such as the Big Gay Day, where the streets surrounding the hotel are cornered off to hold up to 5000 people for a concert.
