From designer cocktails to a unique must-see lighting feature, this weekday bar and weekend nightclub rivals Melbourne's other back-lane gems.
The words 'wah wah' conjure up a variety of unpleasant images, from crying babies to the guitar twang of bad rock ballads. Thankfully Melbourne's Wah Wah Lounge sounds much more like babes dressed in up-to-the minute fashion partying to the latest steaming house tracks than either of the above.
This bar-come-nightclub is at once modern and extravagant, with opulent reflective curtains and eerie blue lighting lining the staircase that leads from the gritty CBD back alley. The simple designer cocktails include the delicious Adore - gin, cucumber, apple, raspberry and elderflower - with Kirin and James Squire flowing on tap and a decent selection of house wines available by the bottle or the glass.
But Wah Wah's main drawcard is the must-see futuristic bubble lighting wall, which arches from floor-to-ceiling in the upstairs dance floor. Custom-built and imported exclusively from London, this is the only lighting wall of its kind in Australia; you'll feel like you're dancing inside a giant disco ball or 80s video game. The tunes are unlikely to be 80s, though, with the weekend club securing a line-up of top Melbourne DJs.
