If you like a rough-and-ready exterior that conceals something special on the inside, road trip it to this winning wine bar set among the vineyards. Check the view too.
The first thing you notice when you pull up at the Victory Hotel, about an hour south of Adelaide, is its rough-and-ready exterior. "Why am I here, exactly?" we hear you asking. Well, its second feature might help answer that question. Just look out from the beer garden and you'll see sweeping views of the South Australian coastline, which makes this the perfect place for a quiet afternoon beer or a glass of wine after a hard day's tasting in the nearby McLaren Vale vineyards.
The third revelation is that there's a whacking great hole in the floor of the bar - otherwise known as the cellar, which Gourmet Traveller's 'Wine' magazine has named one of the best in the world (it's the only SA venue to win such a gong). What makes it so special that it outstrips many far more famous boozers in the state? "We specialise in verticals," says owner Doug Govan, as he wrestles manfully with the recalcitrant cork in a 1986 Grange, decanters and Reidel glasses at the ready. The Victory serves plenty of wine by the glass, and bubbles include the bliss-inducing NV Billecart-Salmon champagne - wine snobs, check your attitude at the door.
