Victoria Tavern

Don't come here for the pokies, because there aren't any. This cute pub has a loyal uni crowd and offers up the simple pleasures of live music and beer.

It's hard to walk past this place without wandering in. From the street, this old-English-style boozer with flowers trailing from window boxes seems to beckon, encouraging you to make a quick stop. Just one or two, right?

This terrifically located pub is just down from Macquarie Street in the CBD. It eschews pokie machines, opting instead for a less commercial and seriously more heartfelt blend of live music and welcoming hospitality. The walls are decorated with sporting memorabilia, the older the better. These sporty artefacts are probably deeply meaningful to sports fans - and just an interesting diversion to the rest of us.

The Victoria Tavern has been allowed to remain gloriously old-fashioned, however there have been refurbishments and renovations. All in all, it's a warm and well-maintained space. During the daytime, the deep leather couch booths make a great spot to take a break from the city.

The owners are firmly committed to providing exactly what the large and loyal uni crowd wants: that's live music and beer. However, that said, there is also rarely a lack of corporate winding-down going on within.
