Gaze up at the high ceilings and ponder this slick spot's synagogue past. Or slink into the 'secret garden' outside and sip a cocktail.
Set on the northern edges of the city, the site now occupied by Trunk has had many lives - housing everything from a synagogue to the renowned Silitto's Italian restaurant. The slick interior features a long marble bar running the length of the room, countered by high ceilings, mirrored panels and walls adorned with edgy hand-drawn graffiti-style touches.
Trunk is proud to boast a fine selection of local, Italian and French vino, as well as at least eight boutique beers on tap at any one time - including some of the less usual suspects such as DAB, Bitberger and Erdinger. Chocoholics beware of the cocktail list, which coos at you with rich enticements like the Trunk nougat martini with biscotti (rum, frangelico, white chocolate liqueur, cream and biscotti); and the equally tempting espresso Nutella martini.
In summer, the outdoor courtyard setting - with arched trellis and climbing vines - lends Trunk the special 'secret garden' vibe that lures a regular crowd of city workers eager to chill-out with a cool beer or classy cocktail. The premier signature selection of cocktails includes the Aperol Sour (Aperol, fresh pink grapefruit juice, sugar and an egg white).
I went to Trunk for the first time with a group of friends a couple of Fridays ago. It has a really great beer garden outside with gas heaters. It was absolutely packed! Inside it is a big space with a wicked graffiti drawing around the front door. There are heaps of good beers on tap plus some interesting bottled Italian beers I had never tried. We got hungry late in the night so ordered some pizzas. No hawaiian on this menu! But we had one with chorizo and olives that was awesome and one with italian sausage... a bit gourmet and SO tasty. A really cool bar - I will definately be back.
