Read some Tacitus here if you like, but pints of Guinness and hearty pub meals are more the go at this Trinity College-inspired watering hole.
Taking its name from the famous college in Dublin, this busy bar and bistro sets a quaint piece of Ireland smack bang in the heart of Surry Hills. Once inside, bar-goers will find that the academic-theme reaches further than simply the name, with countless weighty-looking tomes lining the walls, creating a cosy setting.
Of course, punters don't really head to Trinity Bar to read and learn - they flock there to sink some icy tap beer, indulge in hearty (and well-priced) pub meals and perhaps watch some rowdy sports being played out on the TV screens. Backpackers rub shoulders with carefree locals, suited nine-to-fivers and cut-loose students with shallow pockets here, a testament to Trinity's welcoming vibe.
You can either sit in the protected outdoor area that overlooks the street corner, or mosey inside where the dark-wooden central bar offers an excellent selection of tap beer, wine and bottled bevvies. Twelve brews flow from the brass taps, including Guinness, Kilkenny, Becks and Cascade Light. For those who don't drink beer, there's an extensive wine list; and for those not into sports, the sound system is known to spread all sorts of tunes, from jazz and lounge music to upbeat dance tracks.
Trinity Bar has been my local for a good few years now and never disappoints. The guys who run the show take a lot of pride in the place and it shows. The bar staff are that perfect mix of friendly and professional. The regulars are greeted with a smile and a quick hello, with a keen eye on thirsty punters approaching the bar for their next round.
The food is good, solid pub grub with daily specials meaning even the most frequent visitor doesn't get bored with the offerings.
What better way to compliment good staff and food than making sure the beers available on tap are top notch? Trinity has one of the best ranges of draught beer in Sydney - Little Creatures, James Squire (Golden Ale at the moment), Coopers and of course, Guinness. All beers are available in pints as well (not those tacky tankard style glasses either).
If you're keen on International Football (Soccer), Rugby Union or League you'll be well looked after by the Trinity - most major games are shown here. Aussie Rules doesn't get much of a look in and cricket is mostly relegated to the smaller screens, but it's a happy mix most days. The Trinity does get busy and noisy during a major game, but the atmosphere is always jovial.
A more recent addition to the pub is the cocktail bar upstairs. Although more upmarket than the real "pub" flavour downstairs, the service here is also really good and it can be a haven if you're not interested in any of the games being shown downstairs. Don't worry, you can still drink those fabulous draught beers upstairs and even eat up there too.
In cricketing terms, the Trinity is a great all-rounder - perfect for kicking off a night out, relaxing with friends, whiling away an afternoon, a catch up bevie with a mate, a few before (or after) you've been to any code of footy (SCG and Aussie Stadium are only 20 mins walk away), a good cheap dinner, a few cocktails or that one last drink before calling it a night. Trinners is a winner in my book!
