Mix it with a sociable mixed bag of punters at this classic inner-city boozer, which draws in both locals and far-flung Sydneysiders.
The Tilbury is one of Woolloomooloo's classic dependable pubs. First and foremost, it's a fave round-the-corner boozer for locals. But it's also a popular destination for Sydneysiders who live further away but are willing to shell out on cab fares just so they can get there and sink a few amber schooners with their mates.
Looking around, the crowd is a mixed bag - and that's what really gives the Tilbury its warm charm and soul. I skim around the joint and spot clusters of high-pitched girlies, beefed-up footy mates chugging beers, muscle-tee dykes, designer preppies, lovely gay boys, laidback locals plus a few dazed party people who seem to be wondering what the hell happened the night before.
Downstairs, the atmosphere is casual and there are no pretensions on the door. Heineken, Becks, James Squire and Coopers Pale Ale are all available on tap and there's an Italian restaurant which serves up the usual spaghetti and pizza options.
Upstairs, the setting is a little more homely, decked out with comfy couches and dark wooden trimmings. The terrace is particularly busy on weekends, especially if the weather is good. Crowds really pour in to soak up the hot midday rays and get face-and-shoulder tans while they booze up, spill personal news and cut loose.
