If you're after a beer and a yarn, head to this classic Aussie pub, which is free from pretension and brimming with heart.
The recently reopened Windmill Bar is rustic in appearance, with dark brown bricked walls, colonial-style lighting and wood-grain furnishings. The doors are open from 6pm every night, welcoming drinkers to sit and watch the footy (AFL, rugby or soccer) on the big-screen television, or just sip on an ice cold beer and listen to stories about life in outback Australia. These are entertaining tales for visitors, but real life for the local patrons who drink here.
There are no airs and graces here, just cold beer, good conversation and down-to-earth drinkers who are more than happy to have a chat. The Windmill has a few beers on tap, including the regulation VB and Carlton Draught. There are more choices available by the stubby including Guinness, Crown Lager and Tooheys Extra Dry.
The wine list predominantly features South Australian varieties, including Chapel Hill from McLaren Vale and Nepenthe Riesling from the Adelaide Hills. There are a few premium red wines on the list such as St Hubert's cabernet sauvignon from the Yarra Valley and Pepperjack Shiraz from the Barossa. Five wines, including a sparkling red, are available by the glass with prices ranging from $6 to $8.
