With a refurbished interior and a historic past, this pub serves up boutique beers and is home to Adelaide's largest bar balcony.
The Stag seems to know the secret to eternal life. Originally established in 1849 - and rebuilt in 1903 - this iconic pub has witnessed many changes from its Rundle Street home, facing the East End's parklands. It's hosted plenty of pub crawls, decade after decade, but there is nothing of the jaded hangover to be spotted in The Stag's appearance today. Possessing the largest bar balcony in Adelaide (which can hold 160 people), this historic watering hole has a polished, old-fashioned exterior.
Behind the yesteryear facade lays a modern, refurbished interior with stainless steel touches. This is a pub, bar and nightclub all rolled into one, and it definitely draws a party crowd. DJs spin house, pop and commercial hits on Fridays and Saturdays, and live bands rock up regularly. Beer lovers will gravitate towards the 18 amber choices flowing on tap; sidle up to one of the four marble and jarrah bars and order a boutique honey-blonde Beez Neez, a Redback or a Bohemian Pilsner. Downstairs, there's a daytime cafe and an a la carte restaurant with a menu that emphasises hearty steak meals.
