Renowned muso Jeff Buckley once downed a Guinness at this well-worn Canberra institution. Expect threadbare lounges, folk tunes, mellowing incense and bountiful amounts of the good old black ale.
It would be fair to say that there is not a single Canberran who hasn't heard of this well-worn pub. Or moreover, one who hasn't actually set foot inside to sample what is claimed to be the best Guinness in town.
The Phoenix is a timeless kind of watering hole (long-standing, well-loved) and for good reason. While Irish pubs have become somewhat standard in this land down under of ours, The Phoenix sets itself apart.
Step inside and you will be transported to the cobbled, back streets of Ireland, where Guinness and folk music flow in equal amounts. Well known for supporting homegrown music and theatre, The Phoenix regularly plays host to live acts. Even legendary muso Jeff Buckley and John Bell (the founder of the Bell Shakespeare Company) have sunk a Guinness or two here.
Worn couches provide a comfy spot to lounge, spill a little philosophical dialogue and mellow out as the scent of incense fills the air. Meanwhile, the cluttered barscape doubles as an unconventional art gallery, showcasing abstract paintings, prints and postcards from around the world.
Besides Guinness, a good selection of brews flow from the taps that flank the wearied bar, including Kilkenny, Stella Artois and Reschs. If a pint of the black stuff doesn't serve to fill you up, there is also a range of light snacks.
