A drinking institution since 1846, this refurbished pub serves up frothy amber schooners, rocking live bands and scrumptious beef Wellington.
The Duke is definitely not a chi-chi establishment for youngsters flapping their fresh ID at the door. Instead, it draws loyal after-work drinkers set in their 30s and 40s. The regular crowd comes for the 5pm beer buzz, a game of pool, and the sort of wonderfully pointless barside conversation that makes a real Aussie pub exactly that. Established way back in the 1840s, The Duke has had a colourful history with bouts of operation as a restaurant and a hotel. These days, it's a pure pub once again, however it also possesses a spiffy boutique streak. Wander through the sleek, renovated setting and sidle up to the service counter for a truly unique beer experience. This place is one of only a handful of pubs in Hobart (and the world) offering Tasmania's new Moorilla Estate-crafted Moo Brew beer on tap. Of course, less adventurous drinkers can always stick with James Squire, Boags Draught or Guinness. The menu is unpretentious, offering simple pub grub classics such as beef Wellington, lamb shanks and woodfired pizza. Bands rock up Thursday and Friday nights, and the pool tables always beckon those who like to sink the eight ball along with their drinks.
