With a new McIrish pub popping up on every corner these days, the Drunken Poet is breath of fresh air that has blown straight from the Emerald Isle itself.
Those of us that have made the backpacker's rite of passage to Ireland will immediately recognise the Drunken Poet as an authentic Irish pub, all about great pints, great people, and great music. "No TVs, no shamrocks, no bull" is the mantra at this genuine boozer, and the locals that prop up the bar love this little slice of 'real' Ireland that has sprung up in West Melbourne.
Wandering into this cosy and inviting drinking den, you'll be greeted and asked how you're doing by someone who actually cares to hear the answer. By the time you've pulled up a stool at the bar, whiling away the minutes while your Irish ale is poured, you'll be chatting to the locals and making new friends faster than the head on a Guinness settles.
There are plenty of low tables or high benches with stools if you prefer to keep to yourself, and the great poets look down from the walls, encouraging deep thought or perhaps another round.
The first Thursday of every month hosts a poetry night, with a featured poet and an open-mic section for the budding writers in the crowd. There's traditional music on Fridays, blues or rock on Saturdays, and singer-songwriters keeping it mellow on Sunday arvos.
