Once the last refuge of the desperate-to-drink, this CBD hotel is now a glam haven of plush velvet, funky tunes and quirky features.
The Carlton Hotel has undergone a reality TV-worthy extreme makeover. Gone is the dreary saloon - once a haven for that one last desperate swill back when The Carlton was the only place still open at 4am. In its place is a sparkling glam-rock bar, popular with young professionals, suits and industry types.
Head up the stairs from Bourke Street and step into a long bar furnished with an explosion of cushy velvet. Large windows overlook the scurrying shoppers below and allow ample light to flood the plush booths during the day. At night the purple and green roof panels dominate, providing a vintage disco feel. DJs spin funky tunes here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, while the aforementioned late license means you can dance on until the birds start to sing.
The revamped Carlton Hotel is a truly unique place; a stuffed ostrich guards the door as you enter and behind this sentry you'll discover a cabinet of curiosities from local artists.
Saunter to the bar and you'll find eight beers on tap, including Asahi, Stella Artois and Kronenberg 1664. An array of snazzy cocktails is on offer and there's a sprightly wine list with a good selection of both big names and boutique.
