It may be a long way to the top - but don't let that put you off. This bar is well worth the climb.
Keep climbing the winding wooden steps at the back of the Arthouse Hotel in Sydney's CBD and you'll eventually reach the arty Attic bar. It's a bit of a trek, but the low leather couches, old-world armchairs and dim lighting create an intimate ambience that's perfect for a cosy night in. A smoking and chess room back in the day, this smallish room has an easy charm and is adorned with artwork aplenty for you to critique while your drinking partner orders at the bar.
The bar staff whip up some divine cocktails here - the Attic Bar is a more-than-suitable setting for such splashing out. It's also an excellent option if you want to escape the downstairs meat-market - the huge high-ceilinged ground floor bar - for a more intimate chat or gathering. With the furniture taking up so much space it can get pretty packed in the Attic, so get in early to secure a spot. The prices are also rather steep, whether you get bottled beer or something fancier, and the only way out is via the steep staircase - which may be a problem if you intend to stick around for quite a few.
