A few million dollars later and this Victorian-style hotel is looking as hot as ever - almost as hot as the bar-goers who come here for the boutique beer.
A whopping $4 million has gone into this stylish hotel, helping it morph from what was previously a vacant space (apparently once home to an old bank - and before that a pub known as The Huntsman) into a slick watering hole. But stop - before you reel back in shock at the utterance of such an extravagant figure, front up to The Archer and you will see it is money well spent. Every weekend, aftershave-drenched guys and glam, stiletto-clad girls, form an eager queue outside the two-storey building. Inside, crowds of beautiful bar-goers mill around, drinking massive glasses of cold tap brew. The Archer claims to be serious about beer - but if you're looking to down a cold VB while watching the Crows boot a goal or two, you might be out of place here. This is a spot for chi-chi beer sippers (excuse the apparent contradiction in that statement) with several boutique brews available on tap, including Bohemian Pilzner and Beez Neez. House and funk DJs provide thumping beats on the weekend, while cover bands provide easier listening on lazy Sundays. When the weekend draws to a close, it's probably quite fitting to kick back at The Archer and sip on an aptly-named Slightly Jaded cocktail: it mixes Bombay Sapphire, Zen Green tea Liquor, kiwi and passionfruit.
