Not just a bar with a view, this waterfront tavern serves up meals that make the most of some of Tasmania's best local produce.
Located at Elizabeth Street Pier, Tavern 42 Degrees South possesses a great waterside position in an area that's rich in history. This locale was the site of Hobart's first settlement. These days, it's at its buzziest when the Sydney to Hobart wraps up and the yachties dock during late December. It's also very crowded during February, when the Australian Wooden Boat Festival sees old-fashioned tall ships dominate the harbour.
Wander through the venue, grab an outdoor spot in the sun and order some wine and Barilla Bay oysters served with apple and wasabi.
Inside, the ocean theme is supported by sea-blue furnishings, offset by the crisp white bar. There are comfortable leather couches for drinkers, and dining tables with water views.
Tavern 42 has an extensive and well-chosen wine list. In fact, this venue has been awarded best wine list by the Vineyards Association of Tasmania on multiple occasions. Its wine list is updated weekly and it consistently features more than 300 drops. Beer-wise, there are 60 ales to choose from, including boutique Tassie brands such as Moo Brew.
The kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try the mushrooms stuffed with sweet potato served with capsicum and tomato couscous, or the citrus ocean trout with red onion and chickpeas.
