Known as one of the hottest drinking spots in understated Adelaide, this basement bar combines retro decor with garden-party cocktails.
Adelaide customarily cops plenty of flak for being a snoozy little town with a bit of a nanna-esque nightlife. Venues that subvert that stereotype are understandably popular among proud Adelaide residents, and Supermild is one of their favourites.
Slink down to the basement level and enter an eclectic space of retro furnishings, period pieces and sultry lighting. The room combines a hearty swig of grandma's house (though with a much better booze selection than Gran's solitary bottle of cream sherry) with a drop of old-fashioned bordello, courtesy of the scarlet-hued lighting. The room is littered with a mismatched selection of old couches, draped liberally with reclining bodies, while an ancient upright piano takes pride of place.
The slightly kitsch, old-school vibe is embraced whole-heartedly on Wednesday nights when DJs spin well-worn retro tunes all night. DJs also set up residence Thursday through to Saturday, playing either new indie music or sliding into a soul and funk groove.
There are no tap beers at Supermild, but there's plenty more to keep the crowd lubricated. Bottled beers range from our own domestic brews to Indonesian Bintang beer and Old Speckled Hen from the UK. The cocktail list includes 30-odd smooth mixes, with favourites including such garden-party blends as the Apple Crumble (apple schnapps and cinnamon liqueur) and the Cucumber Sandwich (Pimms, apple schnapps, lime and ginger ale).
