While Spice's unparalleled luxury is entirely un-Melbourne, locals can't deny they love having this lavish drinking option in the heart of the CBD.
Despite the snug laneway locale, this clandestine haunt is hardly a secret around these parts anymore and certainly a far cry from the grungy watering holes synonymous with Melbourne's laneways (if anything, the exaggerated opulence of Spice Market screams Sydney).
Yep, this upmarket Middle Eastern and Far Eastern-themed boozer in the Hyatt Hotel is of luxe proportions; picture candle-holding Buddhas, ornate birdcages, plush fabrics, marble floors and vibrant colours offset by sultry lighting. But that is not to imply we don't love having this lavish drinking option in the heart of the CBD, and indeed this chic bar has built a solid following.
The exquisite furnishings come courtesy of the well-travelled owners, who have injected a lifetime of antiquities, unique objects and art from the world over into their beloved Melbourne venture.
Now onto the main attraction: the drinks. There are plenty of fine local wines available, but the cocktails steal the limelight here, which in line with the overarching theme contain an impressive blend of Middle Eastern flavours. The signature cocktail is the punchy and sweet Turkish Delight martini.
If the usual ungodly levels of opulence isn't enough for you, then perhaps you should organise a VIP area. The premium Belle Epoque Lounge is like being inside a genie's lamp, only it's your wishes that are being granted and not the other way around!
