The cute, narrow premises are the only thing that's small about this gem. The flavours of the food are huge - as are the portions - and the drinks menu covers a good range of beer and wine.
I have been searching for a place to post a comment on this place as I need to tell people how fantastic it is & I'm not usually a reveiwer!
I went to Smallbar the other day and I'd like to take a moment to share my experience with you. Firstly Crows Nest needed a bar like this.
It's a little hidden with no glowing sign outside so if you don't know where it is you stumble upon it as I did. As soon as I stepped through the door I was greeted by the bar staff which after just getting my bearings I was a little taken-a-back as you don't get a friendly welcome at some bars!
I asked if I could have a quick look around so one of the young staff said he'd walk me through and explain a few things as we went along. So on we go through the 'corridor' of the bar with exposed brick work, collection of mix-n-match mirrors and church pew seating.
This leads out into a hidden outdoor courtyard, one might say a little gem! Overhead there is vine growing with fairy lights running through it, antique looking furniture, another bar and all is beautifully lit by small candle light dotted around.
By this time the young man had explained the menu to me - they have bits to share that they call 'smalls' and a selection of main meals, their opening times, that there's live music on Sundays and a bit of history about how the bar came to open & what was there before. I assumed he owned the place as he chatted so passionately about it but when I put this to him he replied 'oh no I'm just the assistant manager' which as I would learn later kind of sums the bar up.
So I stayed for a drink and lapped up the atmosphere as I text my friends to get down here quick! As I waited the girl at the back bar chatted to me as if I was a regular and I soon realised that the staff seem to enjoy their work and really appear to care about the place and their guests which I personally think makes a huge impact on the quality of service at any venue.
My friends arrived and we had a few glasses of very reasonably priced wine - Luchador Shiraz. We didn't try the food so I can't comment but will be going back very soon to test it out.
Anyway, I'm sold - Great bar, great atmosphere, great wine & great staff. If you haven't been yet you should give it a try.
