Luring in backpackers and the after-work crowd, this is an ultra popular inner-city roost. Pale ale flows freely from the taps and hot dogs tide over the famished.
There is certainly nothing scary about this hot inner-city roost. After opening its doors in late 2005, The Scary Canary has been flying high, drawing in the after-work set, as well as a throng of travellers from the adjacent backpacker joint. The interior feels refreshingly new, with homely exposed brick walls and large windows that open up to the street. Jolly punters enjoy the ensuing summer breeze while sipping schooners of Heineken and Tooheys Extra Dry, which flow generously from the taps. For the more discerning drinker, there is a weekly cocktail special, with favourites such as the unfailing Cosmopolitan making a welcome appearance. Resident DJs provide the entertainment, spinning an eclectic array of sounds for the eager masses. Friday night offers house, while the rest of the week mixes up anything from retro to requests to get the place thumping and the crowd jumping. The decks get a break on Tuesdays, when a snappy round of speed dating sees hopeful beaus trying to find their perfect bird. A selection of specialty hot dogs are available for those who feel famished after a long night on the dance floor (or the prowl).
