The Royston is a ripper inner city pub - with a super fit out, relaxed vibe and great boutique drinks that keep you coming back for more. The front bar is lined with stacked, jagged stone slabs giving a lovely contrast to the bold drum lanterns hanging above the bar. There are plenty of high stools and tables, and some well-loved couches nestled in the corners that are normally filled with Richmond's mixed bag of locals.
The Royston prides itself on its battery of boutique beers on tap, with five resident tasty drops including Hargraves Hill Pale Ale, Mountain Goat Hightail Ale, Little Creatures Pale Ale, Holgate Pilsner and Coopers Pale Ale, plus two guest beers rotating every fortnight depending on what's new and in season. A real gem is the Royston's beautiful hand drawn ale tap, which can pump out real English style ales. A rare treat. The Royston also stocks a wide range of boutique wines from small producers, so you'll find some new and interesting vino here too. The pub grub is excellent, from the regulars like burgers and parmas to something more special like the black rice seafood hot pot. Perfect washed down with a rare beer.
Considering I held my buck's party in this former worker's pub, my recent visit was with some trepidation and boy, was I impressed. As a regular foodie who enjoys a great lunch, I was very impressed with the food, the wine list, the many beers on tap and the great staff.
I'll be back more regularly.
PS Tip the staff well - they don't expect it but you might get a free beer.

What a great pub
The Royston is a real gem. It is tucked away in the backstreets of Richmond but well worth seeking out. They have 10 beers on tap, mostly small micro or craft beers so far more interesting than most pubs. The food is great and really well priced. The service is good and friendly and the atmosphere is sort of dark, retro but really comfortable. I think this is my new favourite pub. Check it out.
