Tucked behind one of Melbourne's CBD laneways is this third-floor eclectic music haven.
Roxanne Parlour (or simply "Roxanne" as it is known by its regulars) is one of those bar treasures that you have to work for: three flights of stairs worth of work to be exact. As with other third, fourth and fifth-floor Melbourne venues, the sans-lift aspect does help to deter unsightly walk-in's.
The upside of the journey-upon-entry is you can be certain you'll have worked up a healthy thirst by the time you stumble through its red light-lit door, across the chequerboard foyer and up to the randomly den-like bar; the aforementioned bar offers a range of drinks that suits the relaxed devil-may-care nature of this establishment.
Roxanne is a venue for those in the know - who know where they want to go, that is. On any given late-week or weekend night you'll find a range of (often secret) shows taking place on the venue's unassuming stage, with a varied music policy that showcases local and indie bands to up-and-coming and established DJs.
For those partial to the odd cancer stick, the stairs (and lack of outdoor area) can prove something of a challenge - although it doesn't seem to stop the masses of indie kids who frequent this late-night venue of a weekend eve from traipsing up and down with relative frequency.
