Just like home but with better food, better beer, and a bigger television.
Sequestered in the residential streets behind the main drag in Balmain, this hotel looms as a warm light on the corner, drawing those in the know into its comforting clutches.
Although it would have been hardly hidden from the masses when it was established in 1880, the Riverview Hotel is now a welcoming sight for those who like a nice dose of conversation with their beverage of choice. Sure, there's a big screen splashed with the footy when it's on and a handful of pokies dotted in inconspicuous spots, but primarily this is one of those pubs that you just wish was your local.
As far as beers go, Beez Neez and Little Creatures Bright Ale are the standout of the tap offerings, but never fear traditionalists: Carlton Draught and Tooheys New are also still flowing strong. And if you plan on ordering some snacks from the bar menu - perhaps a pizza or a tapas plate for two - the wine list has a good selection of everything from decadent bubbly to full-bodied Aussie red blends to match.
The upstairs dining room is the jaw-dropping icing on this majestic cake. The frequently cycled menu ensures only the most seasonal produce is used, which keeps everything fresh as a stuffed zucchini flower and well within the budget. And even if you want to just hang out in the bar, you can still order a delicious something from the dining room to have in front of the telly. The Riverview Hotel is just like home, only better.
