With black walls and worn carpet, this place lacks any degree of pretension. Rather, it's a bar that revolves around heavy live sounds.
A favourite with rock-pigs and fashionistas alike, Pony has been setting the bar high for inner-city live venues for generations. Well, maybe one generation. Grunge, grime, smoke, blood, sweat and ... you know the rest. There's even a stuffed toy pony somewhere inside called Punch. What you really get here is a scary pub, minus the barflies and the pension-day crowd. But don't be frightened by the carpet that's begging to be torn up and burnt, or the walls painted black so as not to show stains. Pony offers a pretension-free atmosphere in which to drink up and soak in the sounds of some great live rock. With local, interstate and even a few international acts taking to the stage, every live night gives you a chance to acquaint yourself with more than just a future hangover. Check the chalkboard event listings outside, because Pony plays host to hard rock, rare a capella metal vocals, occasional country sounds, fuzz pop, heavy grooves and staple anti-recovery rock sets that often bang on until 7am. While most Melbourne pubs are swiftly succumbing to strict noise pollution regulations, Pony remains unchanged. It's still a sound-blasted, beer-drenched oasis that lives on to rock it up.
