Heaven for those who crave intimate jazz, blues and improvised jam sessions, this Darwin nightspot dedicates its stage to talented and wobbly, new muso types alike.
Nirvana is Darwin's unofficial home of live jazz and blues, and as far as intimate settings go, it has few rivals. Dim lighting and funky decor set the tone. The red leather couch in front of the small corner stage is undoubtedly the desired spot for watching talented musicians ply their trade from close range. Tuesday nights are jam sessions from 9pm until around 1am. Feel free to take a saxophone or any other instrument and join in the syncopated play. A quality regular duo fill in the gaps when budding muso types suffer stage fright. If your musical skills and passion are secondary to your thirst, then don't worry. The compact bar has a fine range of beers, a carefully thought-out wine list and an excellent cocktail menu. For a seriously good red, try the Wirra Wirra Churchblock for $6 by the glass, or step up and slurp down a tropical mango daiquiri from $9.50. The bar co-habitates within a high quality restaurant and a food purchase from the Indian, Malaysian and Thai menu is required to drink at this after-dark spot. It's an ideal place to launch into a night in town, or to simply have a quiet drink and soak up some smooth, soulful tunes.
