La-di-da and ooh-la-la, this French-style wine lounge is a cutie. Step in for vino or cocktails and give the beaded Mona Lisa image a wink.
Formerly a tobacconist, this sweet venue on Grote Street is French at heart and rather ooh-la-la.
Glitzy drapes in the street window look more than a little Moulin Rouge-esque. They also hint at the golden theme that lies inside. Look around and you'll spot gold lampshades and candle-holders, gilt frames and more glimmering curtains. This wine bar and lounge has its fair share of sparkle.
Cole & Son wallpaper and local artworks add a few extra bohemian touches. There's also a knock-off picture of Da Vinci's
Mona Lisa sitting behind the bar in the form of a beaded curtain. Order a bottle of wine and have a staring contest with her. You may look a little odd - but who cares when there's vino to blame?
Seating only around 80 people, La Boheme promotes shoulder-rubbing intimacy and feels rather cushy. The cocktail list is extensive and features lots of classics. Order up a martini and a few tasting plates, then sink into a chesterfield with your main squeeze and indulge in some cosy chats fuelled by sipping and snacking.
There are no drunken yobbos here to dampen the mood. Well okay, one may stagger in occasionally, but rest assured, it's not their primary stomping ground.
