Set near the water, this bar is one of Hobart's favourite after-work venues. Friday night attracts a buzzing regular crowd, spilling onto the footpath.
Affectionately known as Knoppie's, this iconic Salamanca corner pub is a favourite with hoards of Hobartians who cram in every Friday afternoon. The drinking ritual begins as the late day bleeds into night, and professionals come here to sink their knock-off drinks while rubbing shoulders with students and tourists. Tasmanian beer, namely Boag's and Cascade, are the chosen poison for most, and the bar offers a wide range of tap ales and stubbies. It's not unusual to see a table no larger than the average bath mat cluttered with empty and half-consumed beer jugs and towers of sticky, deserted glasses. And that's not to imply that the bar workers are lax at collecting the empties: the punters simply out-drink their efforts. During summer, the Friday afternoon crowd often spills outside and overflows onto a nearby grassy patch in search of some shady salvation supplied by overhanging trees. This grassy knoll has helped many a weary drinker recover from the ailments associated with a combination of sun exposure and amber ale. Even the icy Tasmanian winter doesn't deter the loyal drinkers from visiting Knoppie's. They simply cram inside a little tighter.
