An Irish pub in hot, sultry Darwin? Well, why not? Wash down your steak and Guinness pie with (yes, you guessed it) more Guinness.
Kitty O'Shea's wouldn't be worth its name if it didn't have a few Irish drawcards to it. Step inside and you'll find Guinness and Kilkenny on tap, just as it should be. Then there's the classic steak and Guinness pie on the menu which helps to seal the deal.
The decor also has an Irish feel. There are green highlights on the furnishings and the floor tiling, plus bench-style seating made from dark wood. Look around and you'll also spot glowing Guinness beer signs and a few compulsory shamrocks, however as soon as you walk out the door and into the outdoor area any thoughts of Ireland fade away. No amount of green paint can compensate for the warm tropical Darwin air outside or the potted palms looking extra lush.
Kitty's offers a decent traditional pub-style experience. Aside from the Irish beers, there's also Pure Blonde and Coopers on tap and a few Aussie wines available by the glass.
Bands rock every night between Thursdays and Sundays, while DJs take to the decks on Fridays and Saturdays.
If you're feeling hungry, don't expect anything too fancy. Aside from the steak and Guinness pie, the majority of Kitty's meals are either fried or fall into the meat-and-three-veg variety. The menu range includes fish and chips, schnitzels, burgers and steaks.
