Jive's big blue building knows a thing or two about reinvention, and about possessing a colourful, whirling history. This place was once a theatre, and later became the legendary Toucan nightclub in the 70s. It then underwent two decades of bewildering changes - reborn as a bar, nightclub, risque strip joint, nightclub again, and a comedy club. Today, Jive is a live act venue for local performers, mid-level national bands and the odd international cult act. Its original theatre design elements give it a huge advantage over many other band performance venues - making the space an acoustic winner with plenty of character. The stage stands before the sunken dance floor, so drinkers can have clear sight-lines from the bar level. For a different perspective, head to the upper level and check out the stage action from the balcony. Most afternoons, Jive exudes a chilled lounge vibe, and caters to university students looking for post-study drinks. The bar is well stocked and much effort has gone into making sure the range of wines and spirits is, if not high in quantity, rich in quality. On crowded band nights, the beer of choice is Coopers Pale, carried through the audience pack to where friends loyally guard each other's spots.
