Oozing eccentricity and filled with kitsch memorabilia, this is definitely a beer drinker's pub and live gig space. Don't come here expecting fancy-pants cocktails.
There are several reasons why the Grace Emily Hotel is loved by locals and visitors to Adelaide alike, starting with the sign on the footpath that states 'No Pokies, No TAB'. It's a straightforward message from a pub that proudly presents live music six nights a week. The front bar is decked out in the finest of worn-out kitsch, with the walls adorned with old Bollywood posters, toys, postcards, board games and knick-knacks. Look around and you'll keep discovering more stuff.
Refreshments are basic. There's little more than Coopers on tap, a few basic spirits and a couple of house wines. But who can complain when the open fireplace is always lit up on chilly nights, keeping the place toasty? The dartboard is also a goodie, provided there's enough elbow room for you to aim properly.
Behind the front bar lies the main room - home to Adelaide's cheapest pool table, and a stage that's used for an eclectic mix of local, national and international gigs. Uni students and boho types take in the tunes, even crouching on the floor if the place is packed out. Pass by the stage and you'll discover the beer garden out the back, which is popular in summer, attracting crowds of barflies who want to mix a warm night with some cold beer.
