This fromager's heaven is snuggled in a quiet nook of the busy GPO building.
The historic GPO bar and dining area has a secret: tucked away on the side of the establishment is a little cheese store, left over from the days when the GPO was a produce market. Formerly just involved in retail, the GPO Cheese and Wine Room has extended its premises to service the casual dining public. On the menu is fresh goat cheese, white moulds, washed rind, blue cheese and everything in between, as well as a selection of cured meats, sliced ocean trout, delicious dips, olives and more than 200 fine Australian and European wines to match. Removed from the mayhem of the GPO after-work crowd, there are two intimate areas to dine: one open-planned and perfect for groups of more than two, and the other, a sandstone-clad converted fire exit where you may only enter in pairs. The passionate, cheese-loving staff focus on matching food and beverage, and if you would like to learn a little more you can ask them about their private tasting tours or self-guided Cheese and Wine Flights. With communal sharing plates, bottles of wine, table service and an effort to remain small, intimate and private, the GPO Cheese and Wine Room is not your average bar, so hush, hush!
