Adelaide's leading live venue has a great community spirit. The punters are fiercely loyal and even helped save the pub from property developers and their wrecking ball.
Ask anyone what Adelaide's premier live venue is and chances are they'll say 'The Gov'. It's one of the city's best-loved venues, as well as one of the few that can lay rightful claim to being a community pub. Sure, the Entertainment Centre might be right opposite, but there's no debate as to which is the real home of entertainment on Port Road.
The front bar has played host to free folk jams and sing-alongs every weekend for more than a decade. During the week, you can catch sets from some of Adelaide's up-and-coming live acts while you munch on a lamb burger from the bar menu. The saloon bar is the pub's restaurant, offering woodfired pizzas and baguettes as well as the more traditional fare. Many of the bigger shows offer a dinner-and-show option with their tickets.
'The Gov' is best known for gigs in its 1000-person capacity live room, which hosts internationals such as Gomez and the Black Keys and Australian favourites such as Radio Birdman and The Whitlams. However, thanks to a quirk in the excellent acoustics of the room, you'd be wise to keep your voice down at the bar. The performers can hear every word!
