This former working man's pub now draws in a trendy young set. Shoot the breeze in the laidback courtyard or cut some moves to soul, funk and house.
The south-west corner of Adelaide has developed into something of a hub for young urbanites over the last few years, with many pokie-clad, blue-collar watering holes morphing into hangouts for the city's designer-collar crowd. The Gilbert Street Hotel is one such place. Behind the classic bluestone exterior lies a joint that mixes hip, kitsch styling with old-Australian pub decor. With an almost open-plan layout, the island bar quenches the thirst of the entire pub. Look around to discover the dining room to the east side and the front bar to the west. Punters can order a frothy, tap-poured Asahi, or get the bartenders to mix together a gin-based cocktail. The dining room is swathed in deep rich reds, making it a fitting spot for a juicy lunchtime steak. Reasonably priced, the menu offers up-market pub fare, along with a short but impressively high-quality wine list. Step outside and explore the compact but charming beer garden out the back, or pull up an alfresco seat on Gilbert Street. Retro '80s sounds reign on Wednesday nights and acoustic bands rock on Thursday nights. Nightfall on weekends bring another change in tone, with DJs spinning funk, soul and house tunes. The Gilbert Street Hotel also occasionally holds dress-up themed club events.
