Bypass the too-cool-for-school bars and enjoy old-style fun at this historic club. It's not all beer for the blokes; sexy schnapps puts smiles on the fraulein's faces too.
You don't have to be wearing lederhosen to have a good time at the German Club (part of the South Australian German Association), a traditional mahogany-adorned beer-house that's stood the test of time since its arrival in Adelaide in - gasp - 1886. Yes, Adelaide has a long and rich German history, but some things never go out of fashion, like the consumption of great beers in great company. Bottled wheat beers include Weihenstephaner, Korbinian and an original pilsner, while schnapps devotees get the fair share with classics like the almighty Jagermeister and Doornkaat.
Behind the bar, manager Christa Lippki keeps some traditional treasures such as Austrian 'Grog' and Gluhwein, so if in doubt, just ask. Indeed, this welcoming inner city haven provides more than just a drinking hole, with live entertainment on Friday nights, featuring accordions, drums, singers and pianists in traditional German garb. And if you're after a private function, there's eight extra rooms available for all kinds of events, catering to a minimum of 20 people to a maximum of 550. It's no wonder that the German Club remains a popular mainstay of the Adelaide bar/venue scene.
Meals were great. Cooked quickly but still awesome in flavour. Seems to be just as good as it was way back in the 1990s.
