Would you mind if a super-sized rabbit twitched its nose at you while you sniffed your glass of red? Or if a dangerously large deer pranced past you mid-sip?
Hidden down a dead-end laneway that runs off St Kilda's gritty Grey Street, the George Lane Bar is the perfect playful place for a covert drink before you head out for a big night on the town at the surrounding bars and all-night dance clubs. The front bar, along with the adjoining lounge and dance floor, are decked out with surreal black and white animal murals - such as a pretty-looking deer and a rabbit with rather large ears - opulent velvet antique-style furniture, and retro Chinese wall posters in ornate frames.
There's a drinks menu to match, with a selection of off-beat and eclectic flavours that run from the tempting 'blah blah basil' and 'tipple over the edge' cocktails to a knee-deep list of rum and gin options. The wine list features a blend of new-world whites and old-world reds, and Kirin and Heineken are available on tap. If you can tear yourself away for a while from the seductive qualities of a dimly lit chaise longue, you can cut some moves on 'funksoulboogaloo' Saturday nights or in a game of twister on Tuesday nights.
