Modelled after the Berlin bar of the same name, the concept of beer and ping-pong is sure to prove a winner among Sydney-siders.
Sydney's oh-so-trendy Burton Street has again added to its expanding treasure-trove of quirky watering holes and welcomes Doctor Pong to the table - but not just any old table. This soon becomes clear as you near the modest Burton Street entrance and step inside, only to find yourself greeted by an impressive blue ping-pong table (thankfully, the "Pong" reference has nothing to do with the aroma of the kitchen fare).
The cute handwritten coasters, black leather chesterfields, DJ decks and retro ping-pong table centrepiece all work together to ensure that the surprisingly spacious concrete surrounds are still packed with a whole lot of character. And the philosophy at Doctor Pong is beaut: just "beer, beats and ping-pong".
There is no guest list at this hip joint, no cover charge, and the prices for drinks and nibblies are certainly reasonable (although the selection is a little limited). From the enticing cocktail menu, the Frangelico fizz and the uber-refreshing lychee mojito are definitely top bevvies to sip on; or perhaps a beer served in a delectably kitsch red party cup is a little more to your taste?
Well I came across The Doctor by accident. On Sunday I was aimlessly walking along and suddenly heard reggae floating in the air, what a relief, cool people, cold drinks and great food, I was cured. Now I know where I'm going.
