Lush tones and swingin' tunes emanate from this ultra-cool, ultra-popular Melbourne bar.
Jazz aficionados seem to be a somewhat unforgiving bunch. Immune to the homogenous beats that emanate from popular radio stations, their attitude towards the lay music devotee seems to be laced with a certain derisive air and a pair of raised eyebrows; so it's fair to say that my trip to Dizzy's Jazz Club was imbued with a sense of trepidation from the judgement that was certain to come my way. Only it didn't; and to be perfectly honest, Dizzy's was fun.
Featuring a narrow room that's scarlet all over and paved with floorboards, this jazz bar has got the ambience of a subterranean groovester at a convenient and easy-access street level location. Having been there for eons, it's established itself as Melbourne's premier jazz venue by featuring a range of local and international guests and pays homage to its namesake through quirky means, like naming seating sections after famous jazz precincts.
Reverential types quaffing glasses of red are de rigueur at places like this, but don't be put off if your knowledge of jazz is about as extensive as many current affairs programs' understanding of current affairs. Dizzy's is inherently enjoyable and makes jazz accessible to those who weren't born with a Miles Davis album in their hand. By combining drink specials with big band nights, jam sessions and family-friendly brunches on Sunday, they've created a very hip hangout for Melbourne's cool cats indeed.
