With waterfront views and plenty of frosty beer, this place really parties when the Sydney to Hobart yachties dock on dry land.
There's a saying at Customs House Hotel that yachties competing in the famous Sydney to Hobart race haven't completed the journey until they've 'passed though Customs'. During the new year period, when the race is drawing to a close, this pub stays open 24 hours a day, filled to the gills with sea-weary sailors, race officials and keen party-goers playing up and raising their glasses. Customs House really is your quintessential sports bar. It attracts the sports-mad regulars as well as out-of-towners on end-of-season team trips. The decor is secondary to the commanding plasma screen mounted above the main bar, which screens everything from one-day cricket to international swimming trials. This bar generally attracts a relatively older crowd than most of Salamanca's bustling nightlife joints, and by comparison, the drinkers are usually better behaved. Early in the week, live acoustic music flows through the leather-clad lounge area, and by week's end the band cranks up the volume, belting out classic beer-drinking tunes for punters who crowd the dance floor. Tap beer and stubbies are the leading drinks of choice, but there's also a wide range of imported vodkas to wade through.
