Chic and karaoke don't often go hand in hand, but the winding stairs and secret rooms of Chi Lounge take the jaded combination of sake and singing to a whole new level.
At the top of a secluded staircase in the bustling heart of Chinatown, Chi unfolds as a tri-level bar, rooftop garden and karaoke club - though thankfully devoid of the Asia-kitsch that dominates most of Melbourne's karaoke haunts.
The main bar is a sensual, curvaceous space: opulent parlour-style couches with opium cave settees. The dimly lit walls are papered with oriental fabrics and striking floral murals, contrasted with intense Gustav Klimt prints and clandestine booths curtained with slatted wooden blinds.
Mysterious staircases headed with bronze blossom screens lead to the second level. Here you'll find indoor water features, Buddha icons and river stones, which surround a network of private karaoke dens where cocktail service is available at the push of a button.
The Asian-infused tapas menu is complimented by the extensive collection of imported sake. But for those who want something a little harder, there's a well-stocked whiskey cabinet.
Throw in a few Chi Chis (passionfruit vodka, pear liquor and apple juice), some classic karaoke tunes, and before long meditation may turn to mayhem. If it all gets too much, take your chilled sake for a wander up the last staircase where the tranquil rooftop garden and drinking area awaits.
