One of the problems with the whole gastropub craze is that while the pub's food is undeniably improved, the bar itself can often suffer, as seemingly harmless renovations lead to a sterile, up-market environment that scares off the locals. Fortunately, the Brandon Hotel has managed to avoid this, successfully installing a topnotch restaurant that doesn't encroach on the laid-back feel of the bar.
Regular specials like the hamburger and pot of Carlton or the Friday night happy hour are a drawcard, but, if you're just looking for a quiet pint with friends, you can always entertain yourselves with the board games available at the bar.
